Informed
Consent Policies
The
Open Veterinary Journal (OVJ) is committed to maintaining the highest
ethical standards in veterinary research and publication. The journal
recognizes that informed consent and ethical oversight are fundamental
principles in ensuring the responsible conduct of research involving animals,
animal owners, and human participants when applicable. OVJ requires authors to
demonstrate respect for animal welfare, protection of personal information, and
compliance with internationally accepted ethical standards.
1.
Ethical Foundation
1.1.
Animal Welfare and Ethical Research
OVJ
recognizes the importance of protecting animal welfare and ensuring the ethical
treatment of animals involved in research. Authors must ensure that studies
involving animals are conducted responsibly, with appropriate consideration of
animal health, welfare, and the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction,
and Refinement).
1.2.
Compliance with Ethical Guidelines
OVJ
requires authors to comply with relevant national and international guidelines
for animal research, including institutional animal care and use committee
(IACUC) requirements or equivalent ethical review processes. Research involving
animals must be conducted according to accepted standards for the humane care
and use of animals.
2.
Informed Consent Process
2.1.
Research Involving Client-Owned Animals
For
studies involving privately owned animals, authors must obtain informed consent
from the owners or legal representatives before enrolling animals in research
or publishing identifiable clinical information. The consent process should
include sufficient information regarding the purpose of the study, procedures
performed, potential risks, benefits, and the use of collected data or images.
2.2.
Documentation of Consent
Authors
should confirm in the manuscript that informed owner consent was obtained when
required. Written consent should be maintained by the authors and made
available to the journal upon request. The journal may request evidence of
consent during the editorial or peer review process.
2.3.
Publication of Images and Identifiable Information
If
manuscripts contain images, videos, clinical histories, or other information
that could identify an animal owner, farm, institution, or individual, authors
must obtain appropriate permission before publication. Any unnecessary
identifying information should be removed to protect privacy.
3.
Special Considerations
3.1.
Vulnerable Animals and Special Populations
OVJ
gives special consideration to studies involving endangered species, wildlife,
experimental animals, and animals under human care. Authors must demonstrate
that appropriate ethical safeguards were implemented and that the research was
conducted with minimal harm and appropriate scientific justification.
3.2.
Veterinary Clinical Studies
Clinical
studies involving animals presented for diagnosis or treatment must ensure that
participation does not compromise the welfare of the animals. Owners should be
informed about the nature of the study and any procedures beyond standard
veterinary care.
4.
Ethical Review and Oversight
4.1.
Ethical Approval
All
research involving animals must receive approval from an appropriate
institutional ethics committee, animal care and use committee, or equivalent
authority before the research begins, where applicable. Manuscripts must
include a statement identifying the approving committee and approval reference
number, if available.
4.2.
Compliance Monitoring
Authors
are responsible for ensuring continued compliance with approved protocols and
ethical requirements throughout the study. Any deviations from approved
procedures should be appropriately justified and reported.
5.
Human Participants and Confidentiality
5.1.
Research Involving Humans
For
studies involving human participants, including surveys, questionnaires,
veterinary professionals, animal owners, or case reports containing
identifiable personal information, authors must obtain approval from an
appropriate ethics committee and informed consent from participants where
required.
5.2.
Privacy Protection
OVJ
requires authors to protect the confidentiality and privacy of individuals
involved in research. Identifying information should not be published unless
explicit consent has been obtained.
6.
Continuous Improvement and Ethical Responsibility
6.1.
Commitment to Ethical Veterinary Research
OVJ
continuously reviews its ethical policies to align with international standards
in veterinary science and scholarly publishing. The journal encourages authors,
reviewers, and editors to promote responsible research practices and animal
welfare.
6.2.
Transparency and Accountability
Authors
are responsible for providing accurate ethical statements and ensuring that all
necessary approvals and consent procedures have been obtained. Failure to
comply with ethical requirements may result in manuscript rejection,
correction, or other actions in accordance with publication ethics standards.
