Feline herpesvirus-1 esophagitis in an immunocompetent cat

Abstract
Background:
Herpes simplex virus is a well-recognized cause of esophagitis in humans, mainly in immunocompromised patients, but feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) esophagitis has never been described in cats.

Case Description:
This report describes a fatal case of FHV-1 infection involving the respiratory tract with concurrent esophagitis in a 4-year-old neutered male Bengal cat. Polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry for FHV-1 in the esophagus confirmed the herpetic esophagitis.

Conclusion:
This case highlights the importance of considering FHV-1 in the differential diagnosis of esophagitis in cats, even in cats without evidence of immunosuppression.
