Aims and Scope

Open Veterinary Journal (OVJ) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to the publication and global dissemination of high-quality, scientifically rigorous research in veterinary science and animal health. The journal provides an international forum for veterinarians, veterinary researchers, scientists, academics, and other professionals to communicate original findings, reviews, and scholarly contributions that advance knowledge, improve animal health and welfare, and strengthen veterinary practice.

Scope of the Journal

Open Veterinary Journal covers a broad range of disciplines within veterinary science and animal health, including, but not limited to:

  • Veterinary medicine and surgery

Interdisciplinary and Translational Research

The journal particularly welcomes interdisciplinary and translational research that addresses important veterinary and animal-health questions through innovative approaches. This includes, where directly relevant to veterinary science, the use of molecular, genomic, microbiological, immunological, biotechnological, computational, bioinformatic, imaging, and other advanced methodologies.

Studies integrating veterinary science with related fields are encouraged when they provide a clear and meaningful contribution to animal health, veterinary medicine, animal welfare, disease prevention and control, or veterinary public health.

One Health and Broader Relevance

OVJ welcomes research addressing the interconnected health of animals, humans, and the environment, particularly studies concerning:

  • zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases;

  • antimicrobial resistance;

  • food safety and foodborne diseases;

  • environmental health and animal health;

  • epidemiology and disease surveillance;

  • wildlife-livestock-human interfaces;

  • vector-borne diseases; and

  • comparative and translational medicine.

Research with broader implications for public health, food security, environmental sustainability, or comparative medicine is encouraged when the manuscript has a clear and substantive connection to veterinary science or animal health.

Scientific and Clinical Relevance

The journal seeks research that contributes meaningful scientific evidence and, where appropriate, has potential applications in veterinary clinical practice, animal health management, disease prevention and control, diagnostics, therapeutics, animal welfare, or veterinary public health.

Both fundamental and applied research are considered, provided that the work is scientifically sound, appropriately designed, ethically conducted, and relevant to the journal's scope.

OVJ considers a range of scholarly contributions, including:

Other article types may be considered at the discretion of the editorial team and in accordance with the journal's editorial policies.

Out-of-Scope Submissions

Manuscripts may be considered out of scope when they lack a clear and substantive connection to veterinary science, animal health, animal welfare, or a relevant One Health or comparative veterinary application.

The presence of animals, animal-derived materials, or a veterinary-related term alone does not necessarily make a manuscript suitable for the journal. Editorial assessment considers the primary scientific question, relevance to veterinary science, methodological rigor, and potential contribution to animal health or veterinary practice.
